- Values
- Innovation
- Adaptability
- Passion
- Ideology (or principles)
It's a lot like my list of what gives you true competitive advantage. You can't gain competitive advantage from pricing, quality, delivery, service or technology. Those are short-lived. Your competition (think Circuit City vs Best Buy or the rest of the mp3/tablet world & RIM's Blackberry vs Apple products) will surpass you. It's not even people because we can only hire really the same types of people. What gives you real competitive advantage is:
- Culture--values, ideology, passion
- Collaboration--that enables greater innovation and adaptability
- Systems Thinking--going beyond Hamel's list to include everyone knowing how they affect others within the organization, and how all processes, procedures, systems are interrelated
It's good to see a major author advocate for the soft stuff that really makes a successful company purr as its engine fires on all 12 cylinders barreling down the economic highway.
