It just keeps coming up: we cannot apply a one-size-fits-all solution into our organizations, especially when it comes to communication and motivation. There's a recent University of Iowa study that confirms that certain motivations are going to fall flat with particular personalities.
Anyone who's taken the time to think about this knows it's true. If all you've done is rant about why your people aren't 'getting it' and changing their behavior--achieving goals, working towards the promotion, earning bonuses, etc.--then you haven't thought about them at all. You've thought about yourself and what would motivate you. They are different from you, and they're different from each other too.
Not realizing this leads you to the insanity of similar incentives and repeated messages without getting the results you want. It's easy to fail as a leader, trainer, etc. Most of us do, because we do what we did. It worked for a few. Why wouldn't it work all the time? The problem must be with them.
Isn't it?
