Maybe you remember the history lessons or some of the old westerns about ranchers versus sheepherders. The battles were over grass and access to water (e.g. "Heaven with a Gun" starring Glenn Ford).
Even today there are water battles as the southwest and southern west coast continue to drain their water sources. Lake Mead's level hasn't rebounded from a few years ago.
As global warming continues to 'heat up' (sorry about the pun), the water wars are going to get worse. Maybe there'll be a migration back to the Midwest and Northeast where, so far, there are still some decent sources of water. Minnesota with its 10,000 lakes, anyone?
