I've heard that 60% or so of Americans think Donald Trump is unfit to be president, yet 20% of them voted for him (don't have source for this data since it was something pundits on PBS Newshour said last night). That means 12% of the votes went into his column but came from people who don't think he should be president-elect today.
What if those people had voted for Gary Johnson or Evan McMullin instead. We would have a more visible third-party alternative for one scenario. And the electoral college map would look a whole lot different than it does today for a second scenario.
We are a fickle electorate because we graded Trump as more trustworthy despite this: "According to a tally by Toronto Star reporter Daniel Dale, Trump made 104 false claims during the presidential debates compared with only 13 by Hillary Clinton."
